US Sand & Gravel boosts efficiency with Sandvik and Crushing Tigers

U.S. Sand & Gravel (USSG), a leading supplier of high-quality aggregate materials in Texas, has grown from humble beginnings to becoming an integral player in the region's construction industry. Established in 2015 by Casey and Celeste Raitz, the company began with just a single used Freightliner dump truck. Through their dedication and vision, this family-owned business now operates multiple pits, employs nearly 100 people, and owns a diverse fleet of trucks and equipment capable of handling projects of all sizes.
USSG ensures their customers receive top-tier aggregate materials by leveraging their own pits. Their product lineup, including washed sand, limestone road base, and clean rock aggregates, caters to a variety of construction needs, ensuring materials are tailored to project-specific requirements. Over the years, USSG’s materials have supported numerous infrastructure developments, fostering progress and enhancing the quality of life for local communities.
One key site, Pony Creek Quarry, boasts a 900-acre reserve of vital road base materials. Recognizing the untapped potential of this resource, Casey and his team invested in equipment to process raw materials efficiently for the next decade. This investment was made possible through a strong partnership with Crushing Tigers, a trusted distributor of Sandvik mobile crushers and screens, based in Austin, Texas.
Darragh Bonfil, Territory Manager at Crushing Tigers, recalls meeting Casey in 2015 when USSG was a budding operation based in a modest office in Stephenville. Since then, Crushing Tigers has played a pivotal role in USSG’s growth, supplying and supporting Sandvik mobile equipment, including the QE342 Scalper, QI341 Impact Crusher, and QA441 Doublescreen.
Initially renting the versatile Sandvik QE342 mobile scalper, Casey was impressed by its production capabilities and decided to purchase the machine to kickstart operations at Pony Creek Quarry. The QE342’s heavy-duty screen box and efficient scalping technology allowed USSG to process material quickly and cleanly. Following this success, Casey added a Sandvik QI341 HS impact crusher to the fleet to produce both TXDOT state-spec road base and non-TXDOT spec base materials.
Feeding into the Sandvik QI341, this mid-sized impact crusher features the unique Prisec™ concept for both primary and secondary applications, offering unmatched flexibility and precision. With its crescent-profile hammers and adjustable rotor speed, it maximizes material reduction while maintaining fine control over output.
At the final stage of the crushing train, the Sandvik QA441 Doublescreen ensures finished materials are sorted with precision. Its dual adjustable screen angles, combined with the large 5’ x 20’ screening deck, enable the production of clean 1" rock to meet the demands of local concrete producers.
Customer service remains the cornerstone of USSG’s operations, and Casey emphasizes the vital role Crushing Tigers has played in their success. “The customer service we receive from the boots-on-the-ground sales and support team at Crushing Tigers, and even the Sandvik finance side, makes deals happen quickly and easily,” Casey shares.
Exceptional production and lower cost of ownership
The performance of Sandvik equipment also continues to impress, as Casey notes its exceptional production rates and fuel efficiency compared to competitors. Features like next-generation fuel-efficient engines and optimized hydraulic systems contribute to lower ownership costs, while extended hydraulic fluid change intervals of up to 4,000 hours ensure operational efficiency.
With a clear vision and strong foundation, U.S. Sand & Gravel is poised for continued growth and success. Crushing Tigers and Sandvik are proud to support their journey and remain trusted partners in their mission to deliver top-quality materials and innovation to the industry.
