Penguin Trading & Agencies invest in Sandvik wheeled plant for their iron ore mine

Penguin Trading & Agencies (PTA) is a subsidiary of the Bathwal Corporation in India and has been operational since 1985. Their main business activity is iron ore mining and they are the proud owner of the Raikela mine, in the Sundergarh district of Orissa. The captive iron ore mine is located in one of the most mineral rich states of the country and has estimated reserves of 33 million tons of iron ore.
Currently, the fully mechanized open-pit mine produces over 2.592 million tons annually. However, they have future development plans and have secured approval to increase production to 4.95 million tons per annum starting later in 2025.
Wheeled plant for mobility and versatility
Since 2018 PTA has been a proud owner of Sandvik stationary equipment. Needing to move the plant to a new location due to the ore body beneath this, they decided to invest in mobile equipment. They opted for wheeled plant due to the space constraints on site but also as this would give them the flexibility to move the plant when desired in the future. To process the feed size of 500 mm, the Sandvik UJ310 primary jaw crusher and UH412 cone crusher were proposed for the job.
Sandvik UJ310 is a primary wheeled jaw crusher mounted on a triple-axle-bogie trailer. The heavy-duty jaw crusher has a welded frame which ensures excellent durability. Powered by a 110-kW electric motor, the unit features the Sandvik CJ411 jaw crusher for strength and reliability. The jaw has a deep symmetrical crushing chamber designed to maximize feed size, capacity and reduction. Sandvik has engineered this model to operate as a primary crusher which can handle raw material up to 750mm and is rated to process up to 325 mtph.
The secondary crushing unit, the UH412, is a perfect companion to the primary crusher. It is mounted on a triple-axle-bogie trailer and has a four-deck vibrating screen to size product. At the heart of the machine is a powerful CH440 Hydrocone crusher, powered with a 220-kw electric motor. It is designed to handle up to 325 mtph, so it is comfortably twinned with the UJ310 in working on iron ore. It is a versatile crusher because of its wide range of crushing chamber options and adjustable eccentric throw settings, meaning output is easily managed for any operator.
Commissioned earlier this year, the customer is very happy with the efficiency and performance of the plant. When asked about the main advantages, Mr. Santosh Kumar Sahoo, Chief General Manager at PTA said,
the crushers are reliable, highly productive and simple to operate. Due to the electric drive, we are satisfied from an economic point of view as they are very economical to run with less maintenance cost.
The user-friendly design includes features such as the hydraulic CSS setting for quick and easy adjustment of the jaw, soft starting crusher and a frequency inverter for feeder speed control which provides stepless regulation of the feed rate and the jaw to optimize the crushing process. All onboard components are electrically driven, which require minimal maintenance and lower operating costs.
Iron ore mined out from the lease area is utilized mainly for sponge iron making after sizing by the mobile screens. A small part of run-off ore produced from the mine is broken into required sizes manually by the hammers and through the mobile crusher. Metallurgical ore is processed into +10-30mm, 5-18, lump/calibrated ore, lump and -5mm fines. The remaining major part of iron ore is screened and sold onto customers as per demand. In addition to this, mobile crusher plant and screens are used for separation of ore from waste into various sizes.
Lower operating costs, safer working conditions
Alongside the lower operating costs, electrification helps to reduce emissions and improve safety on site. All Sandvik models prioritise operator safety in the design. The units are built with spacious platforms for ease of access to all necessary components and fitted with safety guards over moving componentry and emergency stop buttons throughout.
The equipment was supplied by Sandvik India who have been on hand from the beginning of the project right through to installation. Mr Sahoo comments,
The level of service & support is fantastic. We have found the entire Sandvik team to be very dedicated and what we believe in Sandvik. We would not hesitate to purchase from Sandvik again in the near future.
This high level of service, combined with Sandvik's full lifecycle aftermarket support, will ensure that PTA can keep their plant running at optimal performance with high productivity and maximum uptime for a long time to come.
