Embracing Sandvik innovation and building strong customer relationships a winning formula for Diesel Machinery, Inc.

Since being appointed as Sandvik Mobiles distributor just over three years ago, Diesel Machinery Inc. (DMI) haven’t looked back. With over 25 years of representing a number of crushing and screening brands, DMI is an experienced supplier with a reputable name in the industry. Signing the contract for Mobiles in November 2021, Dan Healy, President of DMI, said “the mobile range complements our existing portfolio and would offer customers a wider choice of equipment from a reputable brand.”
Tracing its roots back to the J.L. Healy Construction Company, DMI is a family run business which was incorporated in South Dakota in 1932 and originally concentrated on highway construction and utility work within the Midwest. In 1982, Pat Healy, J.L's son and CEO of the company, formed the Equipment Distributorship now known as Diesel Machinery, Inc. (DMI). Now a premium distributor of leading brands within the construction and aggregates industries, DMI is a full-service dealership offering equipment sales, rentals, parts, service and finance to serve its customers in the Midwest. DMI has three locations spread across South Dakota in Sioux Falls, Aberdeen and Rapid City.
Their mission is seeking to achieve long-term customer satisfaction by providing the finest products and quick responses. They say “Customer satisfaction is job one at DMI”. They invite and acknowledge innovative ideas that can strengthen their organization and it is with this ethos, that they have become early adopters of some of Sandvik Mobiles latest crushing and screening developments.
DMI was one of the first dealers in the US to order the QI353 tracked impact crusher complete with modular hanging screen. Launched in 2022, the QI353 features a new ground-up mid-size track platform and custom Prisec™ impact crusher. Targeted at quarry, recycling and contractor segments, the QI353 is the most versatile, mid-sized mobile impactor available on the market today, and designed to provide more uptime than any other.
Going big with supply of their largest unit to date
Last year, DMI succeeded in securing an order for the largest unit in the Sandvik range of tracked jaw crushers, with the supply of a UJ640E to one of their longstanding customers and large aggregates producers in the Midwest. This particular model was selected for its efficiency and high capacity to fulfil their production needs.
This beast of a unit stands at an impressive 24’ / 7.3 m tall when in operation and weighs in at 151.5 short tons / 137.5 metric tons. Featuring the Sandvik CJ615, single toggle jaw with a giant feed size of 60” x 44” / 1,500 x 1,100 mm, the UJ640E is capable of achieving outstanding rates of production.
The UJ640E is a dual-powered unit and offers a lower cost-per-ton alternative to diesel. It comes with an onboard diesel generator and electric plug-in to connect to the grid, so customers can choose the most efficient means to operate. This has environmental benefits reducing not only its fuel consumption but also its carbon footprint and providing cleaner working conditions on site through less operating noise and emissions. In addition, the unit also comes fitted with a dust suppression system as standard to minimize dust emissions and rubber lined impact zones for reduced operating noise.
Supplying the first mobile unit of this size proved a simple process and one which DMI took in their stride. The unit is transported in two separate units and easily installed on site. Training was provided upon commissioning and support offered by Sandvik to DMI.
The UJ640E offers significant advantages beyond fuel economy, particularly with its fully electrically driven components. This design enhances reliability and minimizes maintenance, making it surprisingly user-friendly for such a robust unit. Customers have expressed satisfaction with its productivity and efficiency, particularly appreciating the dual power feature and reduced operating costs.
Encompassing the full portfolio from tracked to wheeled
In addition to the supply of this heavy range of equipment, embracing new technology is also at the forefront of DMI’s operation. They have recently become an early adopter of a brand new UJ313 heavy wheeled electric crushing plant, launched into North America towards the end of last year.
Designed for quarrying and recycling operations, the UJ313 wheeled jaw crusher had been on test with one of their customers. After undergoing rigorous testing, the machine's impressive productivity and efficiency quickly caught their attention. Recognizing its potential for a rapid return on investment, the customer promptly placed an order. This decision underscores the machine's ability to enhance operational effectiveness and drive profitability in demanding environments.
Working in a closed-circuit plant alongside a screen and then feeding a cone crusher, the UJ313 has “really performed well,” says Nick Wallin, Crushing and Screening Specialist at DMI, reporting that they haven’t look back since introducing the UJ313 into their operations.
The machine is well laid out and the operators have found nothing they dislike about the machine. It is quick and easy to adjust the CSS, and the big reduction capability is a huge benefit to them.
Customers put their trust in DMI and subsequently, DMI have put their trust in Sandvik with not only the supply of tried and trusted mobile solutions but also showcasing their commitment to leveraging innovative developments to really put DMI on the map as a leader in their market.
We thank Diesel Machinery Inc. for their business and look forward to supporting them, and their customers, in achieving continued growth and success in the future.
